Hartford wildlife control tip of the month: Sick groundhog symptoms - It doesn't matter how old the groundhog is that you have found, you should always decide to take it to the local wildlife control expert rather than keeping it as your own and making it into a pet. Even if you can't find the time to take this little guy there yourself, at least report the issue so that they can come and grab him. Deciding to keep this critter as your own pet is not a wise idea, especially if you have no knowledge in the field of keeping groundhogs, and one of the major threats with keeping one, is going to be disease and sickness. An groundhog needs a very specific diet, and without this, you are going to be creating all sorts of problems for the little one. For example, the wrong ratios of calcium and phosphorous is going to be potentially deadly to the groundhog, and could leave him with a disease called metabolic bone disease, or MBD. This will cause symptoms such as a bow/frog-legged stance, broken or brittle bones, difficult in gripping or grabbing stuff, and even death if the problem is not resolved. Also, this wrong diet could also lead to things such as diarrhea and bloating, which are sure indications that something is not right. The wrong diet could lead to a difficult in defecting or urinating, which can cause the bloating, and even feeding too much, too often or feeding things like cow's milk could put this little guy in danger. Unless you want to potentially kill the little guy, you should always do AS MUCH research as you can before you make the final decision to keep him. Reader mail feedback: Hello Wildlife Removal USA, I have been reading the information that you have on line about squirrels in the attic. We have something in our attic and cannot figure out what it is, nor have we been able to trap it, nor has it been caught in a rat trap. I hear this creature or creatures ??? during the day, as well as at night. There does not seem to be a particular favorite time that they move around. Perhaps the morning is very quiet, and there is more activity in the afternoon and evening. My bedroom is quite a distance from the area that we hear this creature in, so I would not hear it at night even if it is moving around a lot at night. I mostly have heard scratching in the walls, and at one point did hear a big thud. The odd thing about this creature is this. We set a live trap with peanut butter in it, and what ever it is carried large pieces of insulation inside the trap to cover the peanut butter. Like really large- maybe a 6 X 6 inch piece. We feel the trap was not set properly because it did not shut. Next day we put meat in it, thinking it may be an animal that would want meat like an opossum. All this time our rat traps have remained in place but this creature DAILY overs all the traps with insulation....without getting caught. We have not seen anything enter or leave. We found one area that is gapping between he house and fascia but only maybe a 3" opening. We do know for sure that there is enter way at the garage floor. We will put foam insulation in those areas this weekend to hopefully stop rats or whatever it is up there from entering and will continue our trapping efforts. We live in Hartford, CT in the country on one acre. Our house is 7 years old; made of brick. By my description, do you have any idea what we might be dealing with, and any suggestions on how to catch this creature? We also have a squirrel in our basement who has done a substantial amount of damage. We believed he came in through the chimney which is missing its cap. At first we couldn't find him but then he dropped down from some insulation and ran behind the washer drier. He may have been here a few days since we were away. He did not look well when we saw him and apparently cannot get out the way he got in. We now believe he is nesting in the washer drier and we cannot get him to come out.I appreciate all the info your web site; I just cant find anything that remotely sounds like what we have going on with this creature attempting to bury the traps with insulation.
