Indianapolis wildlife control tip of the month: Skunk or other critter deterrent - In a world where wild animals are living quite nicely alongside humans, problems are fast arising which leads to many other problems and concerns in turn. Studies have shown that trapping and releasing a wild animal such as the skunk or other critter isn't a good idea, either because the animal will just return to your home or because it will become prey itself; something you don't ideally want if you are trying to be humane about the whole matter. With a whole bunch of deterrents on the market, it would be easy to get carried away and excited about using them but unfortunately, very few of them actually work. Still, don't be disheartened, there are still things that you can do to effectively deter the skunk or other critter from your using your home as a hotel. You do need to use your head of course! Think about it all logically - the animal needs a way to access your home before it can move in so if you have branches from trees leading right to the attic or walls of your home, you are basically inviting the creature in. Cut these down and you will have already solved part of your problem. A nest box has been shown to work, especially when you combine this with bleaching of the areas that the skunk or other critters used within your home. The bleach or disinfectant solution will work to mask over the scent that the animal uses to claim this "patch" as its own, and by using a nest box, you will not run the risk of killing the animal accidentally by moving it to the wrong place.

Eastern gray squirrels and nests - keeping the critters out of your home - Eastern gray squirrels are very good for your backyard, but when they enter your home, you are going to find that these creatures can prove to be a real pain in the backside. One of the things that you can use to ensure that the eastern gray squirrel stays in your yard and not in your home is a nest box, and with a few pieces of material and some simple instructions, you will soon see how easy this preventative method can be created. You are going to need some materials - ideally, wood that is thick enough to be sturdy and warm, yet cheap enough that you haven't spent a great deal of money. The eastern gray squirrel loves to chew and scratch, so there is a good chance that you are going to be replacing the box within a short period of time. You are going to want wood that is sturdy enough to withstand bad weather conditions - for example, chipboard will easily disintegrate in the rain so this is not a good selection. You may also want to consider gathering some leaves to use within the box as nesting material for the eastern gray squirrel and to keep it nicely insulated. The measurements of the box is going to be important to ensure that the eastern gray squirrel is actually going to use it. The hole on the front should be around 120mm so that the animal fits. It should be around 470mm high, 270mm wide and 300mm deep - these measurements should be sufficient enough to keep the eastern gray squirrel happy.
