Elizabeth wildlife control tip of the month: The nuisance raccoon: The raccoon - now this is going to be one of the most horrifying creatures you will ever have the misfortune of meeting. It may not be the biggest, scariest or snappiest animal around, by anyone's standards; it can still wreak some serious havoc in your home! Let's just take a look at some of the "delights" you can expect from this creature: 1. It is going to knock over your garbage can and leave litter everywhere in a bid to find food. 2. It is going to cause your household pet to get very upset indeed - the pet will snap at family members and friends that they would otherwise not have a problem with, they will become very territorial all of a sudden and could scent mark with their urine, and you will also find that they start barking and growling for no apparent reason. It has often been mentioned that these pets notice the raccoon invasion long before humans do, but by this time they will already have been blamed for the poop on the lawn, the urine behind the couch, and even the knocking over of the garbage can! 3. The raccoon will destroy your home - it will scratch and claw through dry wall, nibble and gnaw through electrical wiring, leave feces and poop in the tiniest of gaps in your home, such as the air conditioning unit, and all in all, it will wreak havoc like none other you have seen. 4. This creature STINKS@ The poop and urine is a problem, as is the dying in small places and decomposing within your home, (the smell of a corpse definitely isn't pretty) it leaves a foul green excrement that stinks when threatened or alarmed, and also territory marks with scent glands. All in all, it could be said that this would prove to be one of the most irritating animals that you would ever have the misfortune of bumping into!

Reader mail feedback: Hi Wildlife Removal USA, I've been having a squirrel problem for the last month. They've been scratching and eating away at the shingles on my house. So every time they start a new hole, I've covered it up with wire mesh so they can't scratch any longer. Yesterday while I was at work they created a hole in the house right above the first floor. I saw one hanging out in there, happy that he had found a place to hang out. Now I don't know what to do. I cayenne peppered the area so that no more come in. But now, what to do to get this one out before he travels further into the house and into the attic? What time of day do they generally leave to go find food? Maybe I could close the hole up then.

Hi Wildlife Removal USA, I found your website online after a search for "squirrels in the attic". We've had an ongoing problem with squirrels the past couple of years. We previously had a local pest control man out who, against my best wishes, put poison throughout the attic (after he tried shooting them with a bb gun and failed). The squirrels quickly chewed through the chicken wire he used to patch the holes, got into the poison, fell down a wall and rendered our walk-in closet useless for a few months due to the smell. We were referred to a companty by a friend, and although they were expensive, thought they would be a humane option. They are currently in the process of capturing squirrels in our attic. There is one live trap, and one trap set on the corner of the roof that is apparently a spring-loaded trap that kills. This trap caught a squirrel by the paw, leaving him dangling out the hole, over our porch, where he struggled until he died. I'm waiting on a call from a district manager, as I'd like the trap removed and replaced with a one-way gate trap. I don't consider spring-loaded, klling traps humane, and hate that I've paid $500 for them to slowly kill all the squirrels around our house. Can you please contact them to encourage them to cease using inhumane traps? Or at least let them know you'll remove their listings from your website unless they can guarantee that they will use humane techniques? EDIT: got the call from the district manager. The trap they are using is indeed intended to catch and kill the squirrel as it leaves the entry into the roof. He said that they can replace the trap with a live trap, but it may not be as effective. He apologized that they didn't explain that they used traps that would kill the squirrels. Please note on your recommendations that a reader should request live traps only, otherwise Wildtech will use killing spring traps along with live traps. Thanks.
