Nashville wildlife control tip of the month: Possums - the stinky creatures: Oh boy! If you thought that the overwhelming scent of the skunk was bad, your nose hasn't smelled anything yet! Have you ever thought about the possum? This animal may be more characterized by its playing dead trait than its smell, but this creature could sure rival the skunk when it comes to kicking up a stench, that's for sure! One of the biggest problems that you will find accompanies the smell of a possum is the scent of a decomposing body, and this is usually the first sign that most people will have that the creature is living within their homes. This stench will burn the nostrils of anyone that gets too close, and the longer the body is left decomposing, the more powerful and revolting the smell will become. Alongside the smell of death, you will find that the distress call from a possum also smells to high heaven. When the animal is alarmed or feels as if it has been threatened, it can release a vile smelling green liquid, and when you combine that with the poop and urine that this creature is renowned for leaving behind, you have a very smelly problem indeed! That is before you even begin to think about the scent marking that this possum will leave behind, plus the smell of other animals, (such as the skunk) that will also spray and scent during territorial wars. The possum is a creature that will wreak havoc in any home that it enters, from the scents it leaves behind to the mess it creates, and even the destruction that it causes will drive you completely to distraction. Between the smells, the damaged drywall, the destroyed electrical wiring and the knocked over garbage cans, you will soon be reaching for the phone for the local wildlife guys!

Reader mail feedback: Hello Wildlife Removal USA, I have read your articles in your web site and learned about trapping squirrels, thank you for all that good information. There are 4 or 5 squirrels that are driving me crazy, they do not live in my house, but the come to my porch / deck, they are not afraid of anything, some times they come se close to me the I am the one who is frightened by these animals. I went to the hardware store and got one door trap, after a few hours I caught one. Now I do not know how to get rid of it, "she" is very mad and going crazy in the trap, I am afraid to try to open the door of the cage to let it go. I would like to kill it while it is in the cage... But I do not know how... What is your advice? Hi ', I am not sure if I have squirrels, but in the morning sometimes about hrs 9- 11am. I hear pitter patter running across roof or ceiling. I am being observant now, I don't hear anything during the day when I in other parts of house. At nite I listen very carefully hears nothing. I bang on the walls over the area I heard the noise b4., again nothing. I started to bang on walls all over the house, still nothing. At nite while in bed, I listen but and may hear a thud or so, not sure if that is something I always heard but didn't notice before. Why at bite it is extremely quiet? Do you suspect squirrels?? Just read your webpage after doing search 'how to keep squirrels out of attic'. I also want to remove them humanely and want to ensure they are out before winter sets in again. The pic on your site where they have chewed the fascia board is almost identical to the the damage on our home! We had a contractor friend seal it up when first noticed the damage but the squirrels have just chewed through the board he used. A friend suggested putting some chicken wire over the new smaller hole, then filling with a can of expandable foam, followed by another piece of thick wood to reseal....do you think this would work? Great webpage and info by the way...saved to my favourites!

Yes, I know that trapping raccoons and removing them at least 10 miles away and release them is the way to go, but have you ever been 5' , 120 pounds and 80 years old and tried to move one of those critters in a trap let alone try to get them in a vehicle and then release them? I doubt it. They'd have my hands chewed off before I got the trap open, if I was lucky enough to lift them into a vehicle, which I doubt I could. I'm sick of them trashing out everything I have outside; bird feeders, ripping finch feeders apart, tearing up humming bird feeders, pulling wren houses out of the trees and trashing them, knocking over my birdbath, they even jumped onto a shepherds hook and knocked a metal bird feeder into the house damaging the aluminum siding. They are evil and I don't own a gun and I probably couldn't hit them if I did and it would also leave a bloody mess to clean up, and at 80 years of age, that's not the easiest job either.
