Do mothballs or ammonia help repel mice?
People are trying to keep mice away from their residence in many
ways. Mouse repellents are one of those, as many believe that these
store-bought and hand-crafted setups and products can, indeed, keep
mice away from their residence. Mouse repellents include various
light and sound set ups, also as chemicals, that are supposed to
repel mice by making the environment less appealing to them. For
example, strobing lights are supposed to scare mice and make them
feel unsafe, and chemical repellents are supposed to repel mice
using their strong, unpleasant smell.
Mothballs are believed to have mouse-repellent qualities for a long
time, and many people use store-bought or residence-made mothballs,
hoping to repel mice. The strong smell of mothballs is believed to
be significantly unpleasant to mice, to that extent that they lose
the interest to enter that particular location. For this reason,
laying out mothballs throughout the residence and front yard became
the initial things people do, when they notice mice on their
property. But, are mothballs as effective as they are believed to be
in repelling mice?
Sadly, mothballs are not at all effective in keeping mice out of
one’s residence. Yes, it is true that the smell of mothballs is
unappealing to mice. It is also true that the smell is irritating
and strong to them, however, not enough to keep them out. The
unpleasant smell cannot be as unpleasant to a mouse as tempting and
the attractive food they are seeking inside one’s residence is. Mice
going to quickly learn to ignore most of the repellents, and they
going to get used to the strong and unpleasant smell. Sadly, using
mothballs is not something that going to help one in keeping one’s
residence mouse-free.
Instead, focus one’s efforts into mouse-proofing one’s residence.
Fix one’s fences, get a dog or a cat, and keep the hygiene of one’s
residence on a maximum level by not piling garbage in one’s front or
back yard, also as in one’s residence. Make sure to empty one’s
trash cans regularly, and don’t leave any food out in the open.
Also, fix any holes or gaps in one’s walls, windows, and roof. Make
sure that mice can’t find a way to enter one’s residence by simply
maintaining it. This is the most effective way to keep mice out of
one’s residence.
