Venomous Snakes of Texas

The Texas state has got around 15 snake species or sub species that are potentially dangerous. However, deaths due to snake bites in the area have been greatly controlled as people are made more aware of the snakes that are around and the development of improved medical practices and first aid. Education and outreach efforts have also made people more aware and they know what needs to be done when one encounters a snake.

Snakes are very important to the ecosystem and we cannot just go out there and kill all of them. They control rodents in a very big way. It is important for people to understand that the use of venom by the snakes is merely a defense mechanism and the snakes don’t really mean to harm or hunt the humans. The bites often occur when your surprise the snake or of it feels cornered. Poor handling of the snakes can also lead to a bite.

Some of the common venomous snakes in the state of Texas include coral snakes, Rattlesnakes, cottonmouths and copperheads. The conflict between humans and snakes has been intensified because of the human population growth. When we move in the pristine areas, we are bound to encounter the venomous snakes more often. Some of the encounters can be very close to home and this may result in bites. Snakes will be around your home because they seek shelter and food. When you have the information in mind, you can be able to follow some guidelines so as to avoid the snakebites at all costs.

You need to make sure that livestock pens, trash dumps, brush piles and wood piles are kept as far away from you area of residence as possible. When you are working in any of these areas, you should always exercise caution at all times. You should never put your leg or arm into anything if you aren’t able to see what is at the bottom.

If you have livestock barns and sheds as well as storage areas, they need to be neat at all times. The materials that are stored on the floor are great shelters for snakes. The venomous snakes in Texas can also gain entry through some rather small openings. Beware of garages, basements and crawl spaces.
