What to do about a squirrel under the porch

Squirrels are everywhere and always ready to move into any environments that offers food, water and shelter. Because they are often cute and entertaining people forget that they are a member of the rodent family, and just like rats and mice they leave a path of destruction in their wake. Attics, chimneys and under your porch or deck provides squirrels with a secure location to raise their young, near to food and water. Although squirrels prefer nuts seeds and fruits they are perfectly happy to make a meal from your trash can or your pet’s unattended food bowl. Bird baths, standing puddles of water, unemptied containers, or even leaky pipes are perfect for squirrels to get a drink.

If you think you have a squirrel under your porch you will find that the best time of year to clear out squirrels under your deck is in the very early spring, before a mother gives birth to her litter or in the fall when the juvenile squirrels are old enough to move out on their own. If the mother squirrel has a nest with babies under your porch it is very difficult to make them relocate. Most suggestions for DIY squirrel removal from under the porch involved making the area uncomfortable. Some suggestions are to throw mothballs or rags soaked in ammonia under the porch. Other ideas are strobe lights, a radio, or a sonic weight emitter. You could set a live trap or a snap trap but keep in mind that either one of these leaves you with a squirrel to contend with weather live or dead.

You can also call it an animal removal service. They will send out a professional who can and trap the squirrel and take it away to a rehabilitation center. Once the creature is gone, make adjustments to ensure that re infestation does not occur. Removing temptations of food and water make your area less inviting. You should also restrict access to the area under your porch by screening it in. Use 1/8 inch hardware cloth buried about 2 inches in the ground all around your porch. Periodically check for signs of critters, like droppings, or a tear in your fencing and take action immediately!
