How to Trap a Fox?

Fox are reclusive, shy and clever creature. They have successfully adapted to those human who are constantly invading their territory. Their diet includes smaller animals, vegetables, fruits, insects, rodents, and carrions. There are times that the fox will invade our property especially if our trash provides an opportunity for a satisfying snack. Some people treat them as pest since they can damage our garden and prey on our pets and livestock. The cats and our smaller dogs are vulnerable against this creature.

Tips When Trapping Fox
Due to their intelligence, trapping the fox can be challenging. Some people choose to utilize the step trapping technique. This trapping method involves luring the fox with foods for several nights. During the first night, the food will be positioned outside of the trap. The bait will be place near the entrance on the second night and inside the trap (but without setting the trap) on the third night. Be sure to hide the trap with pine straws, sticks, or leaves.

The Type of Trap
When it comes to the type of traps, it is best to avoid the leg-hold type of trap. These are inhuman traps that will break the legs of the poor creature. The better alternative would be a wire-mesh trap. The door of the trap will be activated once the fox pull the trap. The trap should be camouflaged; the fox are clever to determine that a trap is a trap. The placement of the trap is also crucial. Make sure to introduce it to a place where it will look natural.

The Bait
As we often said, the trap is only as effective as the bait that you use. The best bait to use when trapping the fox are smelly cat foods, fishes, meat, and pork. The bait should not only be inside the trap but also around the traps. There should not be a trace of human activity around the trap, or it will serve as a deterrent.

Deterrent
There are different things that you can use to prevent the fox from invading your property. Some people prefer to use commercially-available repellents, but these products do not create a desirable result. There are homemade products that you can use as a repellent, but it has not been proven to work effectively. A great repellent against the fox would be loud noises and presence of human activities.

After trapping the fox, the next possible course of action would be relocating them. They are territorial and solitary creatures. Once you choose to relocate them in an undesirable environment, there is a high possibility that they will return to their previous location. In case you have no experience on dealing with a fox, you can seek the help of wildlife control agency. They will set-up the trap and handle the fox properly. This will prevent you from having a direct contact with the fox that can possibly carry disease. Some fox especially the possible carrier of rabies will be euthanized.
